An Opportunity Card extension is possible in Germany, but not simply because you need more time to search for a job.
The initial Opportunity Card is normally issued for a maximum of 12 months. During this period, you can search for qualified employment, work part time for a combined total of up to 20 hours per week and complete short job trials under the applicable rules.
If you find qualified employment but do not yet meet the requirements for another employment residence permit, a follow-up Opportunity Card may be issued for up to two years.
This follow-up card is known in German as the Folge-Chancenkarte.
It allows you to take up the approved qualified employment. It is not a second general job-search period.
Two different types of extension
The term Opportunity Card extension can refer to two different situations.
They should not be confused.
Extending a shorter initial card up to 12 months
The initial job-search card may sometimes be issued for less than one year.
For example, this can happen if you only demonstrate sufficient financial resources for a shorter period.
If your circumstances improve, it may be possible to extend the initial card within the original maximum duration of 12 months.
This does not provide more than one year of total job-search residence.
Receiving a follow-up Opportunity Card
The second situation is the Folge-Chancenkarte.
This can extend the Opportunity Card status by up to two years for a specific qualified job.
The purpose changes from searching for employment to carrying out the approved employment.
The requirements are substantially different from those applying to the initial search card.
The main requirements for a follow-up card
Under Section 20a of the German Residence Act, a follow-up Opportunity Card can be issued if:
you apply while holding the initial job-search Opportunity Card
you have an employment contract or binding offer
the position is qualified employment in Germany
the Federal Employment Agency approves the employment
you do not meet the requirements for another employment residence permit
These conditions must be considered together.
Having a job offer alone is not enough.
The application must relate to employment that requires knowledge and skills normally acquired through university study or qualified vocational training.
The follow-up card cannot be issued for ordinary unskilled or semi-skilled employment.
What counts as qualified employment?
Qualified employment is work that normally requires skills and knowledge obtained through:
university education
qualified vocational training
The actual duties matter more than an attractive job title.
Examples of positions that may be qualified include:
software developer
engineer
accountant
laboratory specialist
qualified healthcare professional
trained technical specialist
qualified commercial or administrative specialist
Whether a particular position meets the definition depends on its real responsibilities and the level of knowledge required.
A position does not become qualified employment only because the applicant holds a degree.
Similarly, a job described as a manager, consultant or specialist may still need closer examination if the duties do not require qualified-level skills.
The Federal Employment Agency and foreigners authority make the relevant assessment.
Why another employment permit must be checked first
The Opportunity Card extension is not intended to replace established work residence permits.
Once you find qualified employment, the foreigners authority should first consider whether you meet the requirements for another title, such as:
the EU Blue Card
the work visa for qualified professionals
the visa for professionally experienced workers
a recognition partnership
another applicable employment residence permit
A follow-up card is only available if the requirements for another residence permit under the employment section of the Residence Act are not met.
This means the Folge-Chancenkarte is a secondary route rather than the default next step after finding a job.
An example of when it may be relevant
The official German information portal provides the example of an applicant who has found qualified employment but does not yet have the two years of professional experience required for the residence permit for professionally experienced workers.
A follow-up card may allow the person to begin the qualified job and gain the missing professional experience.
Once the requirements for the regular employment title are met, the person may apply to change to that permit.
This is an example, not a complete list of all possible cases.
The follow-up card does not mean that every missing condition can be postponed for two years. The authorities still examine the job, qualifications, employment conditions and the reason another title cannot be issued.
The Federal Employment Agency must approve the job
Approval from the Federal Employment Agency is a statutory requirement for the follow-up card.
The agency can review matters such as:
salary
working hours
employment conditions
job duties
required qualification level
whether the position is qualified employment
whether the conditions are comparable to those offered to workers in Germany
The employer will generally need to provide detailed information about the position.
This commonly includes the Declaration of Employment, known in German as the Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis.
The employer should describe the duties accurately and state the guaranteed salary, working hours and contract conditions clearly.
Approval is not automatic because an employer is willing to hire you.
How long can the extension last?
A follow-up Opportunity Card can be issued for up to two years.
“Up to” is important. The actual validity may depend on:
the employment contract
the planned duration of the job
passport validity
the authority’s decision
other circumstances of the application
The law does not allow a further Opportunity Card extension beyond this follow-up period.
The Folge-Chancenkarte is intended to provide time to work in the qualified position and, where possible, meet the requirements for a regular employment residence permit.
You should therefore continue checking whether you can later move to:
an EU Blue Card
a work permit for qualified professionals
a permit for professionally experienced workers
another long-term employment title
Can you use it to continue looking for work?
No. The follow-up card is not intended to provide another two years of unrestricted job searching.
It is connected to the approved qualified employment.
The initial search card allows limited part-time work while you look for a job. The follow-up card allows the future qualified employment that formed the basis of the application.
If you have not found qualified employment, an Opportunity Card extension for another general search period is normally not available.
Read the separate guide for situations where the original card is approaching its end:
→ Opportunity Card Expiring: What to Check Before It Ends
Can an unqualified job support the extension?
No. The official employer guidance states that the follow-up Opportunity Card is intended exclusively for qualified employment.
A position involving only simple or semi-skilled work is not sufficient.
Examples can include work that normally requires no university education or completed vocational training.
Whether a particular job is qualified cannot always be determined from the title alone.
The following factors can be relevant:
required education or training
complexity of the tasks
level of responsibility
job description
employer requirements
occupational classification
If the classification is disputed or unclear, seek a binding assessment from the authority or a licensed German immigration lawyer.
Does the job need to match your qualification?
The exact relationship between your qualification and employment can depend on which residence route is being considered and how the position is classified.
The follow-up card requires qualified employment, but that does not mean every degree holder can use it for any job.
The authorities may review:
the qualification you hold
the knowledge needed for the position
the duties described by the employer
why another employment title is not available
whether the offer provides a credible qualified-employment pathway
The Opportunity Card itself is not proof that your qualification has been fully recognized or that every employer should treat you as a qualified professional.
What documents may be required?
The exact list depends on the local foreigners authority and your circumstances.
Common documents can include:
valid passport
current Opportunity Card
employment contract or binding job offer
Declaration of Employment
detailed job description
qualification documents
recognition or comparability documents
evidence of professional experience
health insurance
proof of residence
biometric photograph
application forms
documents explaining why another employment title is not available
Do not assume that an employment contract alone is enough.
The authority may request additional documents from you or the employer.
When should you apply?
Apply before the initial Opportunity Card expires.
The law specifically connects the follow-up card to an application made during the stay under the initial search card.
Starting early gives the employer time to prepare its documents and allows the authority to involve the Federal Employment Agency.
Useful steps include:
obtain the written offer
request the Declaration of Employment
collect qualification and experience documents
check whether a regular work residence permit may be available
identify the correct local application procedure
submit the application before the current card ends
ask how your residence and employment rights will be documented while the application is pending
Do not begin full-time employment merely because the application has been submitted.
The initial search card normally permits only the employment stated in its conditions, commonly part-time work totaling up to 20 hours per week.
Can you start the new job while the application is pending?
Section 20a contains a special rule concerning the future qualified employment while a decision on the follow-up card is pending.
How this is documented and when the work can begin should be confirmed with the responsible foreigners authority.
Do not rely solely on:
a submission confirmation
an appointment booking
an automated portal email
an employer’s assumption
the general 20-hour permission on the initial card
Ask the authority for written documentation showing which employment is permitted.
This may be reflected in a Fiktionsbescheinigung or another written confirmation.
If there is disagreement about whether you may start work, consult a licensed German immigration lawyer.
What happens after the follow-up card?
The follow-up period should be used to build a more regular basis for continued employment.
Depending on how your situation develops, you may later qualify for:
the EU Blue Card
a work permit for qualified professionals
a permit for professionally experienced workers
another employment residence permit
For example, you may gain additional professional experience, complete recognition or reach another published requirement.
A later application is assessed under the rules in force at that time.
The follow-up card does not automatically convert into another permit, permanent residence or an unrestricted work authorization.
Common misunderstandings
“I have a full-time offer, so I automatically qualify”
No. The position must be qualified employment, the Federal Employment Agency must approve it and another regular employment title must not already be available.
“I can use it because my salary is below the EU Blue Card threshold”
A salary below the Blue Card threshold does not by itself establish eligibility.
Other work permits may still be available, and the employment conditions must be approved.
“It gives me two more years to look for a better job”
The follow-up card is tied to qualified employment. It is not another general search period.
“Any employer can sponsor it”
German employers do not sponsor the card in the same way an employer might sponsor a visa in some other countries.
The employer supplies the job offer and employment documents. The German authorities decide whether the statutory requirements are met.
“The extension is guaranteed if the job is qualified”
No. The application remains subject to review by the foreigners authority and the Federal Employment Agency.
Questions to clarify with the employer
Before applying, ask the employer to confirm:
the exact job title
main responsibilities
required qualification level
guaranteed gross salary
weekly working hours
contract duration
planned starting date
work location
whether the Declaration of Employment will be completed
whether the employer can respond to authority questions
The employer should describe the real position rather than adjusting the title only for immigration purposes.
Organize the published requirements
If you are researching an Opportunity Card extension, the Germany Immigration Call can help you organize the factual information about your job offer and the published routes to check.
During the call, we can:
discuss the general distinction between regular employment permits and the Folge-Chancenkarte
organize information from the offer and job description
identify documents the employer may need to provide
prepare questions for the employer or foreigners authority
identify issues that require a licensed immigration lawyer
The call does not include a legal assessment of whether your job is qualified employment, whether the Federal Employment Agency will approve it or whether you qualify for a follow-up card.
It also does not include contract review, representation before authorities or confirmation that you may start working while the application is pending.
