The initial German Opportunity Card is normally issued for a maximum of 12 months. Its purpose is to allow eligible professionals to search for qualified employment or a suitable qualification measure in Germany.
If your Opportunity Card is expiring, your next step depends on what you have arranged before the date shown on your residence card or visa sticker.
You may be able to apply for a regular employment residence permit, a follow-up Opportunity Card or another residence title connected to a genuine new purpose. If none of these routes is available, you should prepare to leave Germany before your current permit ends.
The Opportunity Card does not automatically renew, and it cannot normally be extended only because you need more time to continue looking for a job.
The Opportunity Card does not automatically renew
The initial version is officially known as the job search Opportunity Card.
It is issued for up to one year. If it was initially issued for a shorter period because you could not demonstrate sufficient funds for the full year, it may sometimes be extended within the original maximum period of 12 months.
That is different from receiving a follow-up Opportunity Card for employment.
Once the maximum job-search period has been used, you cannot simply request another few months because your applications are still pending or because you have not yet received an offer.
A new job-search Opportunity Card can generally only be issued after you have spent at least the same amount of time outside Germany, or lawfully in Germany under another residence title, as you previously spent under the job-search card.
If your Opportunity Card is expiring after the full search period, you therefore need to look beyond a general extension for continued job hunting.
If you have found qualified employment
Finding a suitable job is the most important possible transition.
Once you receive a concrete offer, the first question is usually whether you can apply for a regular residence permit for employment.
Possible routes can include:
the EU Blue Card
the work visa for qualified professionals
the visa for professionally experienced workers
a recognition partnership
another employment route connected to your qualifications and position
Each route has separate requirements.
Depending on the residence title, the authorities may examine:
your qualification
professional experience
the job duties
whether the position is qualified employment
salary
contract duration
professional recognition
approval from the Federal Employment Agency
A job offer does not automatically establish eligibility for a particular permit.

When a follow-up Opportunity Card may be possible
A follow-up Opportunity Card, known in German as the Folge-Chancenkarte, can be issued for up to two years.
It is not an extension for continued job hunting.
It may be relevant if:
you obtained the job offer while holding the initial Opportunity Card
you have an employment contract or binding offer
the position is qualified employment in Germany
the Federal Employment Agency approves the employment
you do not yet meet the requirements for another employment residence permit
The follow-up card allows you to take up the specific qualified employment approved as part of the application.
It is intended as a temporary route when a genuine qualified job has been secured but a regular employment permit cannot yet be issued.

If you have not found qualified employment
If your Opportunity Card is expiring and you have not found qualified employment, a follow-up card is not available solely to continue your search.
Part-time work of up to 20 hours per week does not by itself create a right to remain after the card expires.
The same applies if:
you are waiting for interviews
an employer has shown informal interest
you expect an offer later
you have applications in progress
you are working in an unqualified or temporary position
you would like more time to improve your German
You need a valid basis for a new residence application before the current card ends.
An informal promise from an employer will usually not replace the documents required for an employment application.
Could another residence purpose apply?
Another residence title may be possible if your plans have genuinely changed and you meet all requirements of the new route.
These are not automatic fallback options. Each requires a separate purpose, application and set of supporting documents.
Recognition of a foreign qualification
A residence route for professional recognition may be relevant if an official recognition procedure has identified qualification gaps and you have arranged an appropriate qualification measure.
Depending on the route, you may need:
a recognition notice identifying missing qualifications
a suitable course or workplace-based measure
German language skills
sufficient financial resources
an employer or concrete employment arrangement
A recognition partnership is a separate route. It generally requires qualified employment, an agreement with the employer and German at a minimum of A2.
It is not a way to extend an unsuccessful job search without a qualifying employer.

Vocational training
A residence permit for vocational training may be possible if you have made a genuine decision to complete an Ausbildung and have secured a suitable training place.
Requirements can include:
a concrete training contract
German language skills, commonly around B1
sufficient financial resources
approval from the Federal Employment Agency, where required
Company-based and school-based vocational training can have different financial requirements.
A general interest in training is not enough. The program and financing normally need to be arranged before you apply.
University study
Admission to a qualifying full-time study program may support an application for a student residence permit.
You generally need:
admission from a suitable higher education institution
a qualifying full-time course of study
proof of financial resources
health insurance
the required language skills
A flexible, part-time or distance-learning format does not automatically provide the same basis for a study residence permit.

Doctoral research
Doctoral candidates can fall under different residence routes depending on how the doctorate is structured.
It may be treated as:
university study
research
employment
qualified employment under the EU Blue Card
An acceptance letter for doctoral supervision does not by itself determine the appropriate residence title.
Self-employment or freelancing
A residence permit for self-employment or freelance work may be available if you have developed a genuine and sufficiently prepared professional activity.
Depending on the type of activity, the authorities may examine:
the business or professional concept
financing
expected income
customer or market interest
qualifications and professional licenses
health insurance
economic interest or regional demand
possible effects on the German economy
retirement provision for certain applicants
There is no general rule that every freelancer must present exactly two German clients.
Self-employment should not be treated as an automatic fallback because a job search has been unsuccessful.
Apply before your current card expires
Do not wait until the last day shown on your residence card.
A new university admission, recognition measure, training contract, business plan or qualified job offer can take time to arrange.
When a valid application for another residence title is submitted before the current permit expires, German law can provide for the previous title to continue temporarily while the authority considers the application.
However, the effect on your permission to work can depend on:
the application submitted
the previous residence title
the future employment
the date of application
the wording of any Fiktionsbescheinigung
the decision of the foreigners authority
Do not assume that submitting any online form automatically allows you to begin full-time employment or remain under all previous conditions.
Ask the foreigners authority:
how the application should be submitted
which submission date will be recorded
how your lawful stay will be documented
which employment remains permitted while the application is pending
whether a Fiktionsbescheinigung will be issued
If the authority disputes the timing, validity or legal effect of your application, consult a licensed German immigration lawyer.
When you may need to leave Germany
If your Opportunity Card is expiring and you cannot apply for another residence title, you should prepare to leave before the end date on the card.
The expiration does not normally create an additional grace period for continuing your job search.
Leaving Germany does not automatically prevent you from returning later.
If you subsequently receive a qualifying German job offer, you may be able to apply from abroad for:
an EU Blue Card
a work visa for qualified professionals
a visa for professionally experienced workers
another appropriate employment visa
Before leaving, consider:
deregistering your address
ending or transferring health insurance
handling your rental agreement
closing or maintaining your bank account
canceling utilities and subscriptions
informing the foreigners authority
keeping copies of residence and employment documents
checking your tax obligations
Do not overstay the residence card while waiting for an employer to make a decision.
Checklist three months before expiry
If possible, start reviewing your position around three months before the card ends.
Check your residence document
Confirm:
the exact expiration date
whether the card was issued for the full 12 months
the employment conditions printed on the card or supplementary sheet
Review every realistic job offer
Check:
job title
duties
salary
working hours
contract duration
employer location
required qualification
whether professional recognition is needed
Ask the employer for the required documents
The employer may need to provide:
an employment contract or binding offer
the Declaration of Employment
a detailed job description
information about salary and working conditions
Contact the foreigners authority
Check:
the correct online application or appointment procedure
required documents
processing arrangements
how your status will be documented after applying
Prepare a realistic alternative
If no employment route is available, decide whether you genuinely intend to pursue:
recognition
vocational training
study
research
self-employment
Do not apply for a new purpose only to delay departure.
Prepare for departure if necessary
Having a departure plan does not mean giving up on Germany. It prevents an expired status from creating a more difficult problem.
